Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side as a child due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example that art can be an instrument for activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was inspired to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. DuVernay began producing television news as a student. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. In this role, she launched her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
